Turffontein Track Characteristics
Inside Track vs Outside Track
Turffontein’s most important characteristic is its two distinct turf tracks, the Inside track and the Outside track. These are not simply different distances on the same course. They are genuinely different racing surfaces with different draw biases, going characteristics and historical form patterns.
Always check which track is being used on race day before studying the form. Inside track form does not automatically transfer to outside track results.
Inside track: Tighter turns, shorter run from final bend to winning post. Horses with good acceleration and the ability to quicken around a tight bend are favoured. Draw tends to favour lower numbers.
Outside track: Wider, more galloping configuration. Better suited to long striding horses that need a flat out gallop rather than a sharp turn of foot. Higher draws are less disadvantaged than on the inside track.
Altitude Factor
Turffontein sits at approximately 1,750 metres above sea level, significantly higher than Greyville or Scottsville. Horses travelling from the KZN coast to race at Turffontein for the first time sometimes struggle with the altitude adjustment. Conversely horses acclimatised to Gauteng altitude often run below their best when they travel to sea level for the first time.
Key Races at Turffontein
Summer Cup
Held in November, the Summer Cup is Gauteng’s most prestigious race and one of the highlights of the SA racing calendar. Run over 2000m on the outside track it attracts the best middle distance horses in Gauteng.
Computaform Sprint
South Africa’s premier sprint race over 1000m. The Computaform Sprint attracts the fastest horses in the country and is one of the most exciting races of the year. Draw is critical in this race, low numbers have a strong historical advantage.
SA Classic
A key race for three-year-olds. The Classic trial races held at Turffontein throughout the season are excellent guides to Classic form.
Top Turffontein Betting Tips
Always note which track: Inside or outside track changes everything about form interpretation at Turffontein. This is the single most important factor unique to this venue.
Draw matters more on the inside: On the inside track the draw is highly significant especially in sprint distances. Horses drawn in gates 1 to 5 have a strong statistical advantage over gates 10 and above in 1000m to 1200m races on the inside track.
Altitude travellers: Be cautious backing KZN horses racing at Turffontein for the first time. The altitude adjustment can cause a horse to run below its best without any drop in form at home.
Gauteng trainer dominance: The major Gauteng training establishments — particularly those based at Newmarket and Randjesfontein — dominate at Turffontein. When a top Gauteng stable has a well-prepared runner at home it deserves strong consideration.
